Gender and DEI - Where Do We Go From Here?

Shortly after being sworn in, the President made “two genders” and anti-DEI policy official. "As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female."

And just like that, DEI programs across the U.S. are scrambling to find a new path forward. This move challenges societal progress on inclusivity and raises critical questions for organizations nationwide.

As public opinion is polarized, organizations are left grappling with how to maintain inclusive cultures while navigating potential shifts in societal expectations. Here are a few of my initial thoughts on how accounting firms and other organizations can maintain trust while navigating these policy shifts.

Not Communicating is NOT an Option

Communication is the backbone of culture. During periods of uncertainty, clear, transparent, and values-driven messaging is vital. Firms must communicate their stance on inclusivity—whether through internal policies, external statements, or leadership messaging. Silence is not neutrality. Without a clear position, team members may interpret ambiguity as indifference or, worse, complicity.

Preserving Belonging Amid Policy Shifts

Rolling back DEI initiatives risk alienating employees and clients who value belonging. Firms should focus on reinforcing core values. Highlight stories of diversity and belonging in internal newsletters, town halls, blogs, and social media. Show, don’t just tell, that the firm is committed to fostering an inclusive environment regardless of external policies.

Proactive Messaging and Change Leadership

Change is inevitable, but how it’s communicated makes the difference. Leaders must communicate empathetic, inclusive messages that resonate with diverse audiences. Transparency about challenges and a genuine commitment to equity signal that a firm values all voices, even in turbulent times.

Building Bridges, Not Barriers

Firms that lead with authenticity and belonging will stand out in a divided world. Leaders and internal communicators must serve as bridge-builders, ensuring no one feels excluded. By championing equity, celebrating diversity, and fostering belonging, firms can rise above political shifts, remaining true to their mission and values.
